Greater Lafayette 개요
Purdue University가 위치하고 있는 West Lafayette시와 인근 Lafayette시를 일컬어 Greater Lafayette라고 합니다. 현재 인구 약 14만명이며, 이중 Purdue University에 재학생이 약 3만 7천여명, 그리고 교수, 교직원 등이 약 2천 200여명 됩니다. 그렇다고 해서 대학만이 전부인 도시는 아니며, Aluminum Company of America (ALCOA), Eli Lilly and Company, Siemens, Fairfield Manufacturing Company, Caterpillar Tractor Company, Subaru-Isuzu 자동차 공장 등 다양한 산업체와 연구소 등이 위치하고 있습니다. 즉 옥수수 밭만 있는 것은 아니라는 것이지요. 상대적으로 저렴한 생활비와 낮은 범죄율, 그리고 좋은 자녀교육 여건은, 특히 가족을 동반한 유학을 고려하시는 분들께 매력적일 것입니다. 이외에도, 비록 대도시에 비해 부족하기는 하지만, 대학과 지역사회를 중심으로 펼쳐지는 다양한 event및 축제는 전형적인 미국 소도시의 생활과 문화를 경험하는 데 도움을 주고 있습니다. 또한 Indianapolis나 Chicago 등의 대도시도 각각 편도1시간, 2시간 40분의 drive로 쉽게(?) 다녀오실 수 있습니다.
